The ELPC represents the voices of the protectors of Europe’s natural darkness, advocating for light pollution reduction to politicians and other key stakeholders. Our goal is to drive regulatory and political action on this critical issue.
Across Europe, numerous individuals and organisations are tackling light pollution at various levels. Some focus on advocacy, others on outreach, some work within their local communities, while others are involved in research or lighting design. However, it’s often difficult to get in contact with others and exchange knowledge and material.
For more than twenty years, there has been the idea to connect all night protectors so they can share knowledge, experience, resources, and, more importantly, unite our voices to advocate for a united approach on light pollution mitigation. As a group of people who have been working against light pollution for many years, we want to turn this vision into reality. We want to create a coalition with a main goal to protect our nightscapes, develop better lighting design practices and work towards new lighting regulations.

The European Light Pollution Coalition (ELPC) does not aim to be the sole voice against light pollution in Europe. Instead, we want to unite as many actors as possible to a many-voiced choir as diverse and powerful as the night. We want to be a place to find collaborators for projects, share resources, knowledge and experience, and join forces to be more difficult to ignore. We also want to combine the knowledge of the European experts to make it easier to create guidelines, legislation, regulations, policies and standards.
The European Light Pollution Coalition is neither a new idea nor a new project. Instead, we want to give the night protectors in Europe and beyond a home to work together. We welcome every individual, group, or project to join us without giving up their identity. We also cooperate with Dark Sky International, combining our resources while focusing on Europe.
