Right now, we are a small but dedicated group of people who have worked for years to protect the night against light pollution. We are scientists from different disciplines, lighting professionals, activists, and people who care for the night. We have decided to turn a vision that has been around for more than 20 years into reality. If you have shared the vision of a European light pollution network in the past or think it’s a good idea right now, we want you to become part of the European Light Pollution Coalition. We want you to become one of us.
The ELPC aims to become a network for all night protectors related to Europe. Our goals are to
- raise awareness on the problems caused by artificial light at night
- share knowledge and material on light pollution
- lobby for abatement and control of light pollution in Europe at different levels
- bring together the experts on light pollution in Europe to provide advice for lighting standardisation
- coordinate and guide events and awareness-raising campaigns
- plan joint projects, including securing funding
ELPC will start as a network platform, but we are working on registering as a charity organisation in Germany. The network is open for every group or individual without the need to give up their individuality and legal status. We are cooperating with Dark Sky International and its chapters are welcome to join ELPC too.
We will work towards common strategies against light pollution, and we will support each other, but we also respect that there are different approaches. Our goal is not to be one singular voice, but a chorus of many voices that call out for our mutual goal: the protection of the night and lighting design that keeps damage to nature, health, and culture as low as possible.
